God’s heart has to be wrecked when sexual abuse takes place in a family. Forgive me for painting with such a broad stroke, but everything I know to be true about our Father is that He is loving, kind, and has good plans for us. This personal knowledge of Him is why I can say He has to be wrecked. Sexual abuse to a child is never in His plan. I don’t have the answers as to why these things are allowed, other than the fact there is a very real enemy who is out to kill and destroy everything good.
I have worked through past sexual abuse with many men and women. There is one thing I have seen repeatedly when a person finally releases this trauma to God. They can apply God’s Word to the wound by allowing forgiveness for the violator to enter their hearts and minds. At this point they are released from the hurtful unmet expectations of their childhood.
Below are the words from one precious soul who has been set free from the agony of sexual abuse in one of the “Finding You” groups right here in Tennessee. I think it’s important to read these words and see what this trauma did to her mind, but then see how God turned her agony into victory.
The Girl in the Mirror
You say, ‘I’m a Lioness ready to fight’,
But I see a young girl afraid of the night.
You say, ‘I’m your daughter intelligent and strong’,
But I see a young girl afraid she’s all wrong.
You say, ‘I’m an Eagle ready to fly’,
But I see a young girl wanting to die.
You say, ‘I’m a bride beautifully arrayed,’
But I see a teen girl, hopeless and dismayed.
Your eyes toward me are loving and kind,
The love they exude heals the eyes of the blind.
You say what you see; and you see what you say,
So, I’m asking you Lord, to show me the way
To see the truth and no longer the lies,
So the image I see, I’ll no longer despise.
Your words speak the truth, and this is the key,
I must see what YOU say, then say what YOU see.
The truth is, you knew me before I was born.
The truth is, in your image is how I was formed.
The truth is, you knew me and called me by name.
The truth is, I’m fearfully and wonderfully made.
These truths have opened my eyes, helped me believe
That the true image in the mirror, is what my Father sees.
It’s a girl, looking strong and ferocious, whose been set free.
Most amazing of all, is now I see
That the girl in the mirror, looks just like me.

The line that really grabs me in this poem is, “I must see what YOU say, then say what YOU see.” Grasping and applying this reality on a daily basis will make our lives more complete and free.
I’m thankful for the “Finding You” small groups popping up around the country. God is using this book to piece lives, hearts, and minds of men and women back together.
